The myths about the life and apparent suicide of Elizabeth Siddal,
artist, muse and model of the Pre-Raphaelite art movement were thoroughly examined and dismissed in a fascinating talk by Dr Glenda Youde of York University when she visited smu3a's art appreciation group at Didsbury Parsonage on Wednesday 16th August 2023.
She explained how Siddal's gender meant that her artworks were initially neglected and are only now becoming well-known, and how in fact the male artists of the group frequently took inspiration from her designs.
Glenda recently curated part of an exhibition on the
Pre-Raphaelites at London's Tate Gallery.
