Talk by Michael Ohajuru

32 members of the Art Appreciation group enjoyed a talk by the historian Michael Ohajuru on Wednesday 17th January 2024.

Michael, who regularly gives talks at many of the country’s most important galleries such as the Tate and the National Gallery, talked about Casta paintings. These are a series of 17th century Mexican paintings which narrowly avoided by thrown out by Leicester Museum and Art Gallery as being of little value, but which carried a fascinating but dark theme, that of categorising the ethnic status of the population between white, black and indigenous Indians. They were rescued by one of the curators and formed the basis of an exhibition late last year.
