Meetings are currently held each month at the Old Parsonage Didsbury, Stenner Lane, on the Third Thursday 10.30-12.30.
All aspects of early Egyptian art and culture are discussed
We are a research group learning from each other - examining aspects of life in Ancient Egypt with a focus on the period from around 3100 BCE to 30 BCE though we will also consider the periods around those dates where appropriate.
It is all about fun exploring the ancient history of a people who left an enormous, visible and culturally significant mark on the world.
We examine how and why adventurers and explorers from the west delved into the past and how archaeological techniques developed over the last 200 years or so. The topics include aspects of life and death in Dynastic Egypt such as how the Egyptians were governed, how society operated and the role religion, myth and magic played in daily life as well as enquiries about specific rulers, dynasties, culture, art, communication, conflicts, and monumental buildings.
Each month there will be a presentation on a topic, which is announced in advance, followed by group discussions about the subject where everyone can share what they have found out and the aim is to learn from each other.
No prior knowledge of Egyptology or Archaeology is required at all and there are no exams but there is an expectation that you will carry out some reading or review so that you can engage in the group discussions and fun quizzes. Where possible members are encouraged to bring resources along to show others such as books, research papers or relevant photographs of sites and artifacts from Egypt and museums around the world.
